    Library of Congress controlled vocabularies and their application to the Semantic Web

    This article discusses how various controlled vocabularies, classification schemes and thesauri can serve as some of the building blocks of the Semantic Web. These vocabularies have been developed over the course of decades, and can be put to great use in the development of robust web services and Semantic Web technologies. The article covers how initial collaboration between the Semantic Web, Library and Metadata communities are creating partnerships to complete work in this area. It then discusses some cores principles of authority control before talking more specifically about subject and genre vocabularies and name authority. It is hoped that future systems for internationally shared authority data will link the world's authority data from trusted sources to benefit users worldwide. Finally, the article looks at how encoding and markup of vocabularies can help ensure compatibility with the current and future state of Semantic Web development and provides examples of how this work can help improve the findability and navigation of information on the World Wide Web.

    Encoding Library of Congress Subject Headings in SKOS: Authority Control for the Semantic Web

    This paper explores using XSLT stylesheets to translate LCSH Authority Records from MARC/XML or MADS XML formats into RDF documents according to the SKOS project's Quick Guide to Publishing a Thesaurus on the Semantic Web. Creating an RDF Data Store that represents the content of LCSH will have tremendous long-term benefits in allowing a greater breadth of applications to make full use of the relationships between concepts provided by LC Subject Headings.

    Collaboration in User Interface Design, or Bringing the Public Service Perspective to Building a Digital Library

    This article discusses the potential for interaction and collaboration between Public Services and Technical Services librarians in the development of Digital Libraries. It discusses general principles for interface design, the need to take into consideration aspects of context and audience when developing interfaces, and the unique contribution that can be made by Public Services professionals in taking these factors into account. It concludes with a look at some Web 2.0 concepts and discusses future directions that include more end-user interaction in digital library interfaces.

    Getting Started with CONTENTdm

    This presentation discusses the basic process for building a Digital Library collection using DiMeMa's CONTENTdm® software. It discusses determining access points, setting up field properties, using controlled vocabularies, best practices for metadata design and interoperability, and highlights individual projects at the University of Oregon and Oregon State University.

    Imagining the Northwest : A Digital Library Partnership in Oregon

    This paper documents the development of a digital library of still images created by photographer Lee Moorhouse on the Umatilla Indian Reservation at the turn of the 20th century. The University of Oregon Libraries, working with the Tamastslikt Cultural Institute of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla, developed a Dublin Core compliant metadata structure. The metadata structure accommodates descriptive metadata from different cultural perspectives as well as technical and administrative metadata about multiple manifestations of images.
