Through literary review and my own experiences working with the International Society of Psychological and Soda/ Approaches to Psychosis, this paper will explore the utility and consequences of the construct 'schizophrenia' in order to reconstruct more empowering approaches towards psychosis. By using the framework of Thomas Kuhn's theory of scientific revolutions this paper is divided into three main sections: first, investigating the historical make-up of the psychiatric paradigm and schizophrenia, then reviewing psychological and philosophical critiques regarding schizophrenia, and finally proposing progressive methods of treatment which serve to empower, rather than damage, those suffering from psychosis.en_US
