Abstract
This thesis explores how women have consistently found themselves on the margins of sport, whether as fans, athletes, or entrepreneurs. Whereas previous literature has situated the treatment of women in comparison with their male counterparts, this project illuminates how women receive less – media coverage, financial compensation, and tailored merchandise – than they deserve. It centers two U.S.-based professional women’s leagues, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), along with a new business venture, Women Ball Too, to consider how the current sporting landscape offers new problems and possibilities for disparities in sport. Using survey data, interviews and field observations, this research stresses the importance of creating a narrative for professional women in spots. Thus, this paper finds a suggested model that emphasizes the narrative of women in professional sports, by centralizing the intangibles of “why.” This includes uplifting the voices of professional women in sports, and investing in their market to ultimately “redefyne” sports through challenging, creating and cultivating.
