Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate disability inclusion services at Eugene, Oregon neighborhood parks by comparatively analyzing Amazon Park and University Park. Research began with the collection of census data on Eugene’s disability population demographics and with correspondence with City of Eugene staff to gather information about the parks. The researcher then conducted two physical park audits on each park and used the audit data to develop an online survey questionnaire for community members who use the parks, are involved in Eugene’s disability community, or both. Analysis confirmed that Amazon Park, while not entirely accessible, is much more inclusive to the disability community than University Park. Further findings informed recommendations for University Park to increase use and equity for people with disabilities, such as investing in accessible play structures, establishing inclusive park messaging and programming, and developing park features to increase sensory experience. Other deliverables from this study include a public-facing pamphlet about disability inclusive parks and organizations in and near Eugene, a newly devised neighborhood park audit checklist focusing on disability inclusion, and a memo to the City of Eugene outlining the conclusions and recommendations from this study.
