The field of neuroscience has seen a major conceptual shift in the past forty years. Historically the brain has only been viewed as set in a definitive state from birth – defined by genes and biological structures to determine behaviors (Brady, et al., 2024). These predetermined structures were believed to directly impact the expression of an individual's temperaments and their predisposition to mental health conditions. Today medical research recognizes that the brain is adaptive in response to the environment, therapeutic interventions, and to the mind itself, potentially causing an upstream impact on neurochemical production and expression. Art and literature illuminate the complexity of the human mind as a hopeful avenue to prove participant-centered healthcare. These disciplines allow for a humane introspection of the mental psyche beyond the standard quantified assessment within the traditional field of psychology. The background and literature examples of depression will be briefed in Chapter One.en_US
