The oocyte meiotic spindle and the mitotic spindle are necessary to proper cell division and subsequent development of the zygote. The spindle facilitates chromosome segregation to properly distribute genetic information to newly formed daughter cells. Four C. elegans temperature-sensitive mutants are examined in this paper that have defects in spindle formation or function. or1592 and or854 have defective oocyte meiotic spindles, while or1269 and or987 have dysfunctional mitotic spindles. Analysis of these mutants suggests each may be a novel allele of a gene essential to early embryonic development. Further study of these mutants will be carried out to identify the mutation and characterize their specific role in the spindle throughout cell division.en_US
