Abstract

Learning a second – or third - language gives one insight into other cultures while also enhancing one’s career, travel, and educational opportunities. My thesis investigates language learning at the university level through architecture. In order to ensure student success, universities need to address their overlooked language departments. Aging and insufficient facilities are among the top threats to the success of higher education. Designing a home for the School of Global Studies and Languages will allow for students to have greater success in their studies. Restoring an existing historic building on campus, Condon Hall, as the new home of the School of Global Studies and Languages places all eight language departments – as well as the food studies and global studies programs - together and fosters a greater connection between departments.
