This project investigates the intersection of ecology and aesthetics in residential
planting design, with the aim of developing a new suburban aesthetic that inspires
homeowners to embrace ecological initiatives in their front yards. In particular, this
project looks at planting design for the Lucas Valley Neighborhood in Marin County,
California, which affords many unique opportunities for ecological connectivity at the
neighborhood scale. Best practices for biodiversity, fire-smart landscapes, and water-
wise landscapes are discussed and evaluated for synergies and trade-offs. Three unique
planting plans are presented, each showcasing a different opportunity to be found in
ecologically minded residential design initiatives. |
